Time to read: 3 minutes
Here's a quick one for business owners with a list of subscribers or past customers (and marketers can also recommend what I'm about to say to their own clients too):
There are 3 simple email sequences I always recommend for any business, no matter what industry or how big their list is (also known as a database); here are those 3 sequences and why I recommend them.
- Promoter Sequence
- Flash Sale Sequence
- Welcome Sequence
Sequence 1: Promoter Sequence
The very first thing I recommend is to create a 'Promoter Sequence'.
What it is:
An automated email asking for referrals. It's sent to your most active subscribers or those who leave positive feedback on any individual email.
Why it's useful:
- It's an automated, non-annoying way to organically grow your list and promote your business to others.
- You get valuable real-time feedback.
An example:
At the bottom of my emails are two faces. You click a face depending on whether the email you read was 'good' or 'bad'. Click the smiley, 'good' face, and you're sent my 'promoter sequence'.
Sequence 2: Flash Sale Sequence
Next comes the 'Flash Sale Sequence'.
What is it:
A week-long series of, ideally, evergreen* emails promoting a specific offer. I try to use 5 different angles in the 5 emails I send out.
Why it's useful:
- It makes you money without the stress of running a timed promotion or launch. It's a solid, consistently high-converting evergreen sales sequence which works for practically every business I've used it in.
- It can be cleverly triggered many different ways depending on your marketing 'stack' (the various marketing tools you have), which means this sequence should only trigger when a subscriber indicates they're interested.
- And when they've bought, it should stop the sequence automatically so they don't get any more promo emails. This helps avoid uninterested people from unsubscribing and generally annoying your list.
*evergreen emails - emails which can be sent at any time; they don't rely on any trends or fads and can be used repeatedly without much, if any, editing year to year.
Sequence 3: Welcome Sequence
Finally, the 'Welcome Sequence'.
What it is:
The first series of emails a new subscriber receives when they join your list.
Why it's useful:
- It allows people to self-segment, so you have better data on your subscribers and can plan future content based on their needs.
- It allows you to direct subscribers to your best and most relevant resources based on this self-segmentation.
- It provides a structured way to introduce a new subscriber to your business. You never know where someone will join your list or how much they know about you - this is your chance to 'set the scene'.
An example:
You might recall when you signed up to this newsletter that you were asked to click on the type of professional which described you best. Those clicks are tagged to your profile. This allows me to better understand the kinds of people I'm talking to in this newsletter when I view the tags in aggregate. This means I can adjust content on the fly or send segment-specific emails from time to
time.
Want These 3 Sequences?
I can plan and write them for you, all you have to do is ask. And, because I'm such a nice guy, I'll give you a special price too. On top of that, I'll even help you with how to best set all this up if you'd like.
So, there's the offer - ball's in your court if you'd like to make this work for you.
Having said all this, it's actually a good opportunity for me to update my database - how meta!
So, click on whatever describes you best below - you can choose as many as you'd like if you're torn between them. When you click, you'll be sent to a music video of Jack Black singing with KG in his hilarious movie, Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny.
