A LOT has happened since my last email...
- I'm currently in Thailand at our new beach house (still somewhat a construction site outside, workers banging away putting in a retaining wall) and I've had a great week seeing my dad at the same time. I'm thankful that I'm able to do things like this frequently and it's one of the reasons I love running my own business.
And, while there are certainly ups and downs (see point 3 below for a BIG down) I'm certain you'd agree with me that the 'ups' are worth it. Which is why I love working with other business owners and hearing about the things they get up to.
- My (old) house in West End has been sold and I'm in the process of looking for my new base in Brisbane. I'll likely be back at some point in April to have a boogie at Blues Fest in Byron Bay, so if you're in the area please let me know and we can have a chat over a couple beers and some good music.
- Most recently and by FAR most surprisingly: my business took an unexpected hit due to, of all things, COVID-19 ... aka coronavirus! And no, not because I've caught it - business partners of mine have had their manufacturing plants closed because of it. Luckily enough I have other clients, but the situation certainly highlights an aspect of risk management and mitigation I
hadn't fully considered before: supply chain security.
A warning to others if they do revenue share deals too: a single supplier that's not easily replaced spells disaster if that supplier is essential for operations. And in this case, it wasn't that other factories couldn't produce these products, it's that the suppliers were all in one location. So, geographically, we effectively had 'one' supplier still (even though they use 3 suppliers in the area, thinking they'd avoid potential supply chain issues... but who saw this one
coming?).
So, with that said, I've got a few of my copywriters sitting here twiddling their thumbs, asking me for work now that we've paused all ads and projects for the COVID-19-affected clients...
... which means: you can grab a deal on any copywriting projects right now because I've got to confirm our workload for next month - it's the 24th already, so we're getting to the pointy end!
